EG-1 Burr Replacement

Read me first

The EG-1 Grinder is for professional use and should only be operated and serviced by trained, qualified personnel.

  • Before replacing the burr set on the EG-1 Grinder, unplug the Control Module from mains electricity and wait 5 minutes to allow the unit to fully discharge.
  • Read the entire guide before starting the task of replacing the burr set.

Remove Upper and Lower Funnels

To access the grind chamber and the burr set, first remove the Upper and Lower funnels from the machine.

A. Remove the Upper Funnel

The Upper Funnel is attached to the EG-1 grinder using a set of Neodymium magnets. As a safety feature, removing the Upper Funnel requires two distinct and separate motions.

A. Pull Down – using two hands, grasp the Upper Funnel and pull down toward the Arm Mount to release the magnets securing the Upper Funnel to the Burr Collar.

B. Pull Up – continuing to hold the Upper Funnel down and away from the Burr Collar, pull the Upper Funnel upward and away from the grinder.

B. Remove the Lower Funnel

The Lower Funnel is attached to the grinder in the same fashion as the Upper Funnel. Removing the Lower Funnel also requires two distinct and separate motions.

A. Pull Down – using two hands, grasp the Lower Funnel and pull down toward the Arm Mount to release the magnets securing the Lower Funnel to the Burr Collar.

B. Push Away – continuing to hold the Lower Funnel down and away from the Burr Collar, now push the Upper Funnel towards the base and rear of the grinder.

C. Clean the grind chamber

Before continuing, take the opportunity to clean the grind chamber using a brush or slightly damp soft cloth. The Upper and Lower Funnels can also be cleaned in the same fashion.

Remove Bearing Mount Screws

Using a 4mm hex key, remove the four screws securing the Bearing Mount to the grinder.

Caution: the Bearing Mount is held to the grinder by the screws. The Bearing Mount will drop and damage the grinder if left unsupported after the screws are removed.

Remove Bearing Mount

Using one hand to remove the Bearing Mount, use the other hand to hold the Wiper Assembly in place.

Caution: if not supported, the Wiper Assembly can slip off the main shaft and damage the grinder.

Remove Wiper Assembly

Slide the Wiper Assembly off of the shaft.

A fully threaded 40mm M8 screw can be used to aid in removing the Wiper Assembly if necessary.

NOTE: a 5mm Feather Key and Compression Spring are part of the assembly. Do not misplace. Put aside both parts for safekeeping.

Remove upper burr on Burr Mount

Using a 4mm hex key, remove the two screws holding the burr to the Burr Mount.

Put aside the screws, feather key and compression spring for safekeeping.

Remove lower burr on wiper assembly

Using a 4mm hex key, remove the two screws holding the burr to the wiper assembly.

Put aside the screws for safekeeping.

Attach new burr to wiper assembly - shim

  2. Place the paper between the replacement burr and wiper assembly at equally spaced intervals or 120° around the circumference.
  3. Screw the burr into position.

Remove paper shims

Ensure the burr is held tight by the screws and remove the paper shims.

Attach new burr to Burr Mount - shim

Using the same technique as the wiper burr, repeat the process with the Burr Mount.

  1. Cut three pieces of notebook paper into 5mm wide shims.
  2. Place the paper between the replacement burr and Burr Mount at equally spaced intervals or 120° around the circumference.
  3. Screw the burr into position.

Remove paper shims

Ensure the burr is held tight by the screws and remove the paper shims.

Replace both the 5mm Feather Key and Compression Spring.

Re-attach wiper assembly

Holding the Compression Spring in place, re-attach the wiper assembly to the shaft.

Re-attach bearing mount

Holding the wiper assembly in place, re-attach the Bearing Mount.

Finger tighten the four screws.

Align the burr set

After replacing the burrs, follow the directions for aligning the burr set.
